How The UK Can Avoid Being Held To Ransom By £100k Brickies

Much was made of yesterday’s (Monday 7th April) warning from Deverell Smith and EC Harris regarding the shortage of skilled construction labour pushing the annual salary of those at the top of their game to £100,000 a year.

(See the Management Today article here http://www.managementtoday.co.uk/news/1289118/) But sustainable construction experts, Allen Construction Consultancy, say that the UK doesn’t need to be held to ransom simply because so many trained workers left during the economic downturn.

“Our business is based on our ability to solve problems, and we know through successful experience that sustainable solutions like timber frames address more than the environmental agenda,” says Operations Director, Paul Quinney.

“Not only do highly insulated and airtight pre-fabricated homes protect their occupants from the burden of future fuel poverty, they also reduce the construction programme by up to 60%, meaning that in the time it takes to build one average 3-bedroom brick-and-block home, at least two panel-built homes could be ready for occupation.”

To remedy the projected shortfall of more than 2million units in the housing stock by 2030 an annual build rate of 230,000 homes per year is required. Although pre-fabricated buildings can sometimes require an equally skilled workforce, the time dedicated to each build is so much shorter that even valuable site managers and project managers can deliver twice the traditional results.

Panel installations provide:

  • Up to 60% quicker build turnaround (3-4 weeks compared to the traditional 6-8 weeks);
  • Environmental superiority, with reduced site-based wastage and 80% more efficient occupier usage;
  • Better value (20% reduction in mistakes, labour costs and weather issues)
  • Aesthetically identical properties, with a wide spectrum of available render
