The Project
Allen Construction Consultancy worked in partnership with Oxford City Council and CRISIS, the national homeless charity, to redevelop the Old Fire Station into a multi-use performance, arts and training centre.

The challenges involved included:

  • Liaising with multiple stakeholders
  • Securing additional funding
  • Confined city centre location

Our Role
Allen Construction Consultancy project managed the whole process undertaking option appraisal for design, tendering for contractors, recruiting specialist contractors for theatre, acoustic and ecology surveys, working alongside architects, structural and mechanical and electrical engineers, quantity surveyors and BREEAM assessors to ensure relevant measures were met. Allen Construction Consultancy also delivered Building Surveying services to deal with the Party Wall issues to adjoining properties.

The Outcome
The space re-opened to the public on November 4th 2011, succeeding in its aim is to make the building part of the community. The redeveloped Old Fire Station draws on its cultural heritage as an arts-focused multi-use building, providing inspirational spaces for the whole community including cafe/restaurant, performance spaces and theatre, workshops and art gallery. The project was funded by the Department of Communities and Local Governments Places of Change Programme.

The project has subsequently been recognised for many awards, including:

  • Civic Trust "Community Recognition" 2013
  • APM Project Management Awards "Community Project of the Year" 2012
  • Retrofit "Public Building" category (finalist) 2012
  • International Green Apple Awards 2013
  • Oxford Preservation Trust 2012
